Was this order tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive?

Doubled VAT in QuickBooks almost always comes down to one thing: the order priced tax-inclusive and something downstream treated the total as a net figure. Paste one order’s numbers and find out which convention it used - and what the doubled artifact would look like.

Result

Tax-inclusive pricing

The $20.00 is already contained in the $120.00 total. Net of VAT, the order is $100.00.

What the doubled-VAT artifact looks like in QuickBooks

If a sync treats this inclusive order as exclusive, it takes $100.00 as the net and adds 20% again. The sales receipt lands at $140.00 instead of $120.00 - overstating revenue and VAT liability by $20.00 on this one order.

Multiply by your order count for the period. That figure is what a filed VAT return would be wrong by.

Common questions

Why does VAT get doubled between Shopify and QuickBooks?
Shopify can price tax-inclusive, where the tax is already inside the order total. If the sync treats that total as a net figure and applies the VAT rate again, the sales receipt in QuickBooks carries the tax twice - overstating both revenue and VAT liability.
How can I tell which convention an order used?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. If the difference between the total and that figure matches the tax line on the order, the order was tax-inclusive. If the tax line instead equals the total times the rate, it was exclusive.
What do I do if a doubled order is inside a filed VAT period?
Correct it going forward and speak to your accountant about the filed period. A reversing journal entry can undo a ledger posting; it cannot unfile a return. LedgerClear treats anything dated inside a closed or filed period as propose-only for exactly this reason.
